The recommended place to buy a coat for Mongolia is Mongolia - thankfully the mission sent this information BEFORE we spent $500 for a coat rated to 40 below (most web deals didn't give a temperature rating). We also learned that custom tailored suits and shirts will be available for less than Wal-Mart pricing.

Me again. I found a firm based in America selling military style greatcoats - might be easier to get ahold of than some of those others (posted in TTF topic). OK, I'll stop now.

I would be a bit wary of outwardly looking too wealthy, not out of distrust for the local people but out of respect - I'm sure Shogun will be aware of this. The layers are an excellent idea - let's hear it for thermal underwear! - and also good walking boots and socks. However, maybe a smart down jacket, although the best physical solution, might not be appropriate in this situation. In addition to my own suggestion of a Soviet or Chinese style woollen greatcoat, perhaps it would be possible to purchase a coat locally, although the "organisation" might want him to be fully equipped before he sets off. Good luck from me too. C.

I like the idea of shopping the L.L.Bean catalog. The assorted warm layers of flannel shirt, etc are also
necessary. When my daughter went to school in Indiana or Chicago, she needed really warm pajamas too. Footwear that is waterproof seems sensible. The coats, etc. should be on sale now at reasonable prices.

The social customs of the area are important, and what health insurance will he have?

I don't know, Richard...didn't you last report that the child was assigned to the spring/houston area?
Good luck!

The problem is that it is stipulated that his topcoat *must* be at least a 3/4 length coat--preferably ankle length. (!!!)

Check with LL Bean or the like for down parkas; maybe that plus layers underneath would work.
