Critique, thoughts, review:

I’ve always had a fairly sensitive bullshit meter. With the release of Harry Frankfurt’s “On Bullshit,” the writing about bullshit, however, has become a bit of a cottage industry–there’s this book, the two others I’ve read (they’re in the Bibliophilia section), plus a few more I haven’t deemed worthy of perusal.

Of the volumes I’ve read, this one is the best, I think. Fiercely accurate and darkly humorous, the Dictionary lambastes all those areas of double-speak and outright obfuscation that have soaked into our language in the last 50 years. Really, we weren’t that much of a bullshitting society until the rise of Madison Avenue in the 1950s. Sure, political discourse, and for that matter, oratory in general, has always been a rich vein, but at least there we deluded bipeds have always expected it. Today, every profession has its own particular brand of bullshit. Education, social work, and corporate America are the worst offenders, but it’s everywhere.

You may even be surprised by some of the very cogent examples.

Critique, thoughts, review:

For the life of me, I can’t figure out what all the fuss was about in Frankfurt’s book.

If you’ll recall, there was a huge flap about 18 months ago when this book came out regarding his language. In fact, the only ‘blue’ word I can find anywhere in the book is “bullshit” which has become so permeated within our society I can even imagine Billy Graham popping off with it when incensed.

As far as the content of the volume goes, I found it to be an erudite, concise, and illuminating evaluation of just how terribly steeped in euphemism we have become. If for no other reason that inspiring one to do a frank examination of one’s own language patterns, this book is recommended.

Of course, the flip side is that you will become momentarily depressed and distressed at what a bunch of losers we all are.

Loaded with detail and operational information, this book is a must-read for anyone with an interest in World War II, the US Navy, or submarine service in particular. Richard O’Kane’s experiences as XO of the USS Wahoo and then his long stint as captain of the USS Tang–along with the damnable cause of the Tang’s sinking and the fate of her survivors who escaped from the submarine in 180′ of water, followed by their incarceration in Japanese POW camps–is thrilling, maddening, and stunning.

I must admit–there was stuff in this book that I didn’t know! Of particular interest were the Confederate Rains brothers and background information on Stephen Mallory. I whipped through it in a few hours. If you have any abiding interest in the War of Northern Aggression, then pick it up at B&N. It’s on the 60% off table. :-)

Much better than I may have originally thought; I was expecting a romp, but instead, I got a romp and a good deal of thoughtful, yet still irreverent prose. I especially enjoyed the first two or three paragraphs of each chapter in which Idle consciously mimics with hilarious accuracy the travelogues of fellow Python Michael Palin.
